Long before Too Short or any other
Emcee claimed to " Mack " the women there was Spoonie Gee . Spoonie wasnt as
nice lyrically as Mele Mel , Caz or Moe Dee but his delivery and confidence as a ladies
man made up for it . Spoonies first release was on Peter Browns - Sound Of NY
records in 1979 . It was called Spoonin Rap . An instant classic , it boasted of his
skills with the ladies and on the mic . Originally Spoon was 1 third of the Treacherous 3
, but left and was replaced by Special K .
Spoonie signed to Enjoy records and
recorded " The new rap language " with the Treacherous 3 , and its B side "
Love Rap" . Both were classics ; but Love Rap was unique in that it was one of few
rap records that became a breakbeat itself. Any old school live tape will probably have it
in the background . Spoonie went on to sign to Sugarhill records and recorded "
Spoonies Back " and " Monster Jam " with Sequence . His mack skills were
full blown on Monster Jam where he flirted with Sugarhills only all female rap group .
In the mid 80s Spoon signed with Tuff City
and dropped the Davy DMX produced " Street Girl " and " Big Beat
" . They both did well , but the song and lp that bought him back was the
Marley Marl produced " Godfather " . Spoonie abandoned the player style and went
right for the throat . That lp also gave us the classic " Take It Off " . He was
mia for most of the 90s but ; he is still very heavily sampled and his influence is still
very much felt in Hip Hop .
